My final all-American brand is Colgate-Palmolive (NYSE: CL). The company is well-known for its toothpaste and toothbrushes. But Colgate-Palmolive also owns dozens of strong brand names, including Irish Spring, Speed Stick, Ajax, and many others.
Some investors may think of Colgate-Palmolive as a dull stock. That’s fine by me.
The shares are far less volatile than most stocks on Wall Street. Even though the market overall is well below the highs it reached in the third quarter of 2007, shares of Colgate-Palmolive were never punished nearly as hard.

Brenda Priddy’s long-lens outfit has captured the first shots off the Devon Motor Works GTX supercar during aerodynamics testing.
The butterfly-doored coupe looks very promising in bare carbon fiber, as is word that the prototype was spotted at Willow Springs raceway with British Le Mans champion Justin Bell behind the wheel for testing duties.
This GTX mule certainly has some interesting details to it, including the aforementioned up-and-forward doors, as well as a U-shaped vented hood, center-exit exhaust, a big (and likely temporary) adjustable wing, and funky contrasting fender treatments which may or may not see production.
It isn’t altogether clear what engine will be powering this beastie, but Priddy’s people reportedly overheard the engineers talking of extracting 650 horsepower out of the drivetrain. California-based Devon, you may recall, was the sole bidder Chrysler reported for its Viper franchise, and it’s certainly conceivable that despite the failed bid attempt, the car seen here would still feature a certain 8.4-liter V10 underhood. Indeed, given that Devon continues to tout its creation as “America’s next great supercar,” that scenario seems rather likely.
The GTX is slated to make its first appearance at next month’s Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance (we’ll be sure to grab some live photos), and the coupe is tipped to go on sale in the U.S. first in 2010, with other markets to follow. Check out the gallery of renderings below as well as a video of the teasers after the jump.

The next all-American brand is the world’s largest bookstore, Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN). Actually, it’s not quite correct to call Amazon just a bookstore anymore.
Relentless expansion has propelled Amazon in countless directions in the quest of bigger sales and profits. The company’s main website now offers everything from books to auto parts to groceries!
Shoppers can also download digital content, such as games, MP3s, and movies to their computers or handheld devices — including Amazon’s innovative portable reader, the Kindle, which is on fire.

News Corp.’s (NASDAQ: NWS) new computer cartoon, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, had a strong domestic debut this past Wednesday. It opened with $13.8 million on that day, which represents a record-breaking performance for an animated feature released in the middle of the week. Now, just recently, I mentioned how I hate it when Hollywood promotes the breaking of a record. It tends to be very qualified. This situation is no different. Still, I’ll give credit where credit is due. Dinosaurs is doing well so far.
We’ll have to see how the weekend ultimately treats the new feature. The competition is stiff. It’s the July 4th holiday, and Viacom (NYSE: VIA) is out there with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Thankfully, News Corp. won’t have too much to worry about from Disney’s (NYSE: DIS) Pixar cartoon Up. As can be seen by a Boxofficemojo chart, the excitement surrounding Up has faded. News Corp. was naturally counting on this to happen by this point in time.

How many cars have you owned over the course of your life? Three? Five? Ten? How about 135, and all from the same company? It may seem like unfathomable customer loyalty, but that’s just what one Herr Klaus Hammerschmidt has done in taking delivery of his latest Bavarian motor work. You might think he’d mark the occasion with a new 135i, but instead the 73-year-old retiree picked up a brand-new M6 coupe, complete with the Competition Package, from the flagship BMW Welt showroom in Munich.
Hammerschmidt says he began driving when he was just 12, taking the wheel of his dad’s car while papa worked the pedals. His first car was a 1800ti in 1963, and since then he’s had 26 M cars, 29 Alpinas and another 80 standard BMWs. Before you go pulling out the calculator, that works out to an average of nearly 3 new cars every year. Not a bad way to spend a lifetime’s earnings if you have the means. And at just 73, he’s likely to go through a few more before his days are up. Follow the jump for the video.
